This touching story of two teenage boys in love concerns the deepening friendship between Matthew (Jason Rush), a handsome youth and recent high school graduate, and his best mate Phil (Lee Whitlock), an effervescent senior. He begins to realize that he has sexual feelings for his friend but vacillates between him and his girlfriend. Tired of the taunts of "nancy boys" from Phil's classmates and harassment from their friends, family and authorities, the two go off to a seaside resort, defiantly telling people that they are on their "honeymoon," but Phil's indecision about commitment and his bisexual leanings put a strain on their nascent relationship. A sensitive, sweetly romantic and ultimately uplifting story of love and being true to one's self.
One of the most controversial titles ever screened on the BBC, this 1987 film tells the story of two high school boys who confess their love and flee their town for Brighton Beach to consummate their love. While tame by 2007 standards, this is a pretty explicitly gay and courageous film for 1987. The boys do kiss and the story ends gayly ever after.
