Being a teenager is hard, your body is changing, your hormones have taken control and you’re deep in the fog of teen angst and doubt. But what happens when, on top all this, you have to deal with having more than one sex? This is the dilemma faced by Alex (Ines Efron), a teenage hermaphrodite who flees to Uruguay with her parents in the hope of starting a new life.
But no end of running will solve Alex or her parents’ problems. Far from it in fact, as the onset of puberty means that Alex has to make a choice, is he/she a boy or a girl, or either?
What results is a deft exploration of often challenging family drama and the titillating discovery of ones own sexuality. Director Lucia Puenzo artfully uses this to reveal the heavy strain of adult responsibility when faced with the unstoppable force of youthful metamorphosis we all undertake in our teenage years. This Cannes prize winner has since been selected to represent Argentina in the Oscar Best Foreign Film race.
